Tiramisu dessert - the healthy way

Tiramisu is a popular coffee-flavoured Italian custard dessert. The word 'Tiramisu' means 'cheer me up' in Italian. The dessert is originally made of ladyfingers dipped in coffee, layered with a whipped mixture of eggs, sugar, and mascarpone cheese, flavoured with cocoa. Mascarpone cheese is very high in fat, calories and cholesterol. In other words, the original tiramisu recipe is very unhealthy. Thus, I will give you my recipe of another version of this delicious dessert. All ingredients will be replaced with healthier alternatives, without sacrificing flavour or texture.

Cottage cheese is one of the biggest replacements in this recipe. Cottage cheese is a good supply of protein, B complex vitamins and healthy fats. It contains various minerals, such as calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, zinc, and selenium which all play a vital roles in many of the body functions. 100 grams of cottage cheese contains 98 kcal, 3.38g carbohydrates, 4.5g fat, 2.6g sugar, 11.12g protein, 37ug vitamin A, and 21ug vitamin D.

Cottage cheese also contains the casein protein which is a very slow-digesting protein and releases energy slowly, hence is the favorite protein for sports enthusiasts.

Preparation time: 10 minutes

Ingredients (2 portions):

* 250g cottage cheese

* 200g philadephia cheese (light)

* 4 tbsp natural yoghurt (low-fat) * 1-2 tbsp agave sirup

* 200g self-chosen cookies (healthy, and plain)

* 1 cup of warm cocoa drink (or coffee)

* 6 squares of dark chocolate (grated)

What to do:

Mix together cottage cheese, philadelphia cheese, natural yoghurt and agave sirup in a bowl. Agave sirup adds a sweeter taste to the dessert, so try to add little by little, and not too much.

Boil some water and make a cocoa or coffee drink. Take a new bowl and start with dipping cookies in the drink to soften. Do one by one, and take out before it dissolves in the drink. Add a nice layer of cookies in the bottom of the bowl. Add a layer of the mixture. Then, add a new layer of cookies, and finish with another layer of the mixture. End this recipe with grated chocolate on top. Enjoy!

Good to know:

* Cottage cheese is a good source of calcium and phosphorus, which is recommended during pregnancy.

* Rich source of B-vitamins, including vitamin B12, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, thiamin, niacin, and folate.

* The amount of calcium in cottage cheese is 8% of the daily recommended value, which is good for the nervous system, for controlling weight gain, and help preventing heart disease.

* Quick serving tips: add cottage cheese on top of salads, add it in the egg mixture for making a delicious omelet, or you can use it for making stews.
